The Native Law Centre (NLC) at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan is entering a new stage in its evolution. To assist in this evolution, the NLC is seeking a new Academic Director. The desired candidate will be an established legal academic of First Nation, Inuit or Metis ancestry who already holds a tenured Faculty position at a Canadian law school. The successful applicant will be appointed Academic Director of the Native Law Centre and as either an Associate or Full Professor of the Faculty of the College of Law depending on their qualifications, experience and current academic rank.
The role of the Academic Director will be to help chart the direction of the NLC over the next several years. Working in close partnership with (and reporting directly to) the Dean of Law, the Academic Director will assist in the following key tasks:
- Outline a clear academic vision for the NLC in terms of teaching, post-graduate programming, research and publishing activities.
- Outline a clear vision for the NLC in terms of outreach and engagement with indigenous communities and stakeholder groups.
- Oversee the operations of all activities and programs within the NLC including the PLSNP (The Summer Programme).
- Assist the College of Law in developing its responses to the recommendations of the TRC
- Assist in the recruitment of junior First Nation, Inuit or Metis faculty (who will hold College of Law Faculty positions and also have significant academic and outreach responsibilities within the NLC).
- Act as a mentor to these junior faculty
The position is advertised as a term position in the hope that it will enable established Faculty from other law schools to come to the NLC for a period of several years and develop a plan for the future of the NLC, mentor subsequent junior hires and to start the implementation of that plan. It is hoped that qualified applicants who do not wish to relocate to Saskatoon permanently may be able to obtain a leave of absence from their current institution to allow them to accept this role on a term basis. It is anticipated that this will be a 3 year appointment, although the exact details are negotiable. It is hoped that the appointment will begin in the spring of 2017. The Academic Director will be expected to undertake some teaching and research while in place, but at a reduced level to enable them to devote sufficient time to their key administrative functions.
The NLC has a proud history of being a key pillar of indigenous legal education in Canada. This position presents an opportunity to the successful applicant to play a significant role in the evolution and progressive development of this nationally important institution and to build a cohort of junior scholars who will carry the work of the NLC forward.
The University of Saskatchewan under its new President is embarking on a process that will fundamentally reshape its relationships with Canada’s indigenous peoples. The College of Law aims to be a significant contributor to that process and the NLC will be at the forefront of the College’s efforts. The Academic Director will be a key lead in that process.
The NLC was established by then Dean Roger Carter QC in 1973. It stands on Treaty 6 territory and the traditional homeland of the Metis people. For over 40 years it has been involved in the education of First Nation, Inuit and Metis law students.

The successful candidate will be appointed to a position at the Associate Professor ($112,109 - $130,925) or Professor ($130,925 - $175,000) rank. Starting salary is negotiable, depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The Academic Director will also receive an administrative stipend and dedicated research funds.
In keeping with its ongoing commitment to an inclusive model of legal education, the College of Law is seeking established First Nations, Metis and Inuit legal scholars to apply for this position, though other strong candidates will also be considered. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents.
