Located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in the heart of Saskatoon, the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is the core of a dynamic research hub set in an architecturally stunning century-old campus. Renowned for its cluster of world-class research centres and science facilities including the Canadian Light Source (the nation’s only synchrotron), the campus is a powerhouse of discovery and innovation that helps address challenges faced by people locally and around the world.  With stellar research teams, tools and facilities, as well $175 - 200 million in annual research income over the last few years, the university has earned a place among the U15, the group of Canada’s top research universities. The U of S has been awarded two Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) and a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF)—one of five in Canada. 

Working with industry, government, and community partners, the U of S is known for its six signature areas of multidisciplinary research: Aboriginal Peoples; Agriculture; Energy and Mineral Resources; Synchrotron Sciences; Water Security; and One Health—an integrated approach to human/animal/ecosystem health.  Our 14 colleges (including a full range of professional colleges such as medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, agriculture, business and law) and three graduate schools attract more than 23,000 students from around the world. Our more than 147,000 alumni are spread across the globe.

Reporting directly to the Vice-President Research, the Associate Vice-President Research (AVPR) provides leadership in support of the university’s research agenda, and develops and implements long-term strategy and planning functions for the Office of the Vice-President Research that align with the university’s strategic directions and goals.

The AVPR is a key member of the Vice-President’s executive team and serves on many strategic senior leadership committees, internally and externally to the U of S. The AVPR participates and contributes to U of S leadership by working collaboratively with senior leaders, faculty, students, and staff to ensure the research perspective is considered, expanded, and promoted, and that best practices are applied to strategic, operational, and policy areas. The AVP is also a member of the university’s Senior Leadership Team, providing strategic advice and direction to help the U of S achieve its bold and inspiring goals and ambitions.

The ideal candidate possesses a doctorate in a discipline represented at the U of S. With proven leadership abilities in senior administration, advancement of research best practices, and proven ability to establish strategic priorities to advance organizational mission, the incumbent has a strong research and publication record (including success in tri-agency grant competitions), teaching experience, and a record of successful graduate supervision. In addition to the ability to advocate effectively for external and internal support of research, scholarship, and creative activity, the incumbent has extensive knowledge regarding federal, provincial, and international funding opportunities, trends, research compliance regulations, policies, and practices; national and international research organizations; institutional partnerships and research collaborations; and university research environments and infrastructure.
