Ergonomics Research Assistant

Department: Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture

FTE: Part-time

Status: Temporary contract until September 30, 2017.

Salary Information: Wage is commensurate with training/experience in accordance with University of Saskatchewan RA remuneration guidelines.

Primary Purpose: The Ergonomics Laboratory, directed by Dr. Catherine Trask, within the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture is seeking applicants for a part-time Research Assistant in the field of Ergonomics and Occupational Biomechanics based in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. The position is designed to support investigations in ergonomics and occupational biomechanics relative to identifying and reducing injury risk within a rural and agricultural workforce. This role offers the opportunity to be involved in multiple projects, enabling the development of a wide range of research experience. Nature of Work: This position has no direct reports. Typically, the role will involve a standard 5-day work week with anticipated hours of 9:00am to 5:00pm, although this may occasionally vary due to the nature of research projects being undertaken. While workplace exposures will be minimal, from time to time the position will require on-farm or on worksite fieldwork which may include exposure to grain dust and animals. It is expected that the applicant will have a valid driver’s license and travel to worksites as required. Overnight travel is not anticipated.

Accountabilities: 

  • Assist with data collections, including preparation and distribution of advertisement materials, participant recruitment, participant scheduling, and preparation of materials and equipment for data collection
  • Assist with data processing efforts, including data conditioning and cleaning and calculation of exposure summary metrics
  • Assist in preparation and submission of grants and publications, with opportunity to present results at conferences.  

Qualifications: 

Education: BSc. or MSc. in biomechanics, ergonomics, or related field. Other combinations of educational qualifications and work experience may be considered. 

Ideal Experience:

  • Laboratory and field-based data collection for biomechanical exposures
  • Working with study participants, including mounting and removing measurement equipment.
  • Working with students, lab managers, and post-doctoral fellows
  • Using statistical software packages and computer programming experience (MatLab, LabVIEW, etc.)
  • Proficiency with biomechanical/ergonomics equipment, including: 3D motion capture and analysis systems (Vicon), in-ground force platforms (Bertec), surface EMG systems (Delsys), 6 degree of freedom hexapod vibration robot (Mikrolar), accelerometers (Biometrics), and various neuropsychological tests

Required Skills:

  • Database development and management
  • Demonstrated English writing skills, able to contribute to scientific publications
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to access, review, and summarize scientific literature
  • Team player, demonstrated competence working in inter-disciplinary environments
  • Responsive to a fast-pace and evolving priorities
