Salary Information: $2,511.17 to $3,013.40 per month (Ancillary Services, Phase 1). The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Primary Purpose: The incumbent will assist in all areas of the kitchen as an active and supportive member of the Culinary Services team to create a culinary experience unique to the campus that promotes sustainability, nutrition and social responsibility overall providing customer service excellence and enhancing the student and university experience.

Nature of Work: This position reports directly to the Executive Chef/Assistant Director Food Services and the Executive Sous Chef.  This position will provide support and assistance to the kitchen supervisors. Our goal is to create employee and culinary development through teamwork and a positive, supportive, and professional work environment. Shifts are subject to change with business demands and will include early mornings, evenings and/or weekends.

Typical Duties: Prepare Food under the guidance of supervisors and Sous Chefs and according to standardized recipes, menus and specifications; Production of hot and cold foods including high volume production, short order and presentation cooking; Demonstrate professionalism and customer service ensuring a positive customer experience; Assist in the production and presentation of special events; Adhere to departmental standards, policies, procedures and safety requirements conducive to a safe working environment; Ensure the highest level of Food Safe Handling in approaching work tasks; Sanitation and maintenance of work stations and kitchen equipment; Maintain cleanliness standards in all areas of the kitchen; Assist in other areas of the kitchen as needed; Follow franchise procedures and standards as appropriate; works collaboratively with other staff to ensure seamless customer service, which includes but is not limited to covering sick and vacation time. Treats all confidential information and materials in a confidential manner; Collaborates with others as required to complete assignments and support team efforts.


Education: The incumbent requires a Grade 12 and a Food Safe Certificate.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: A minimum one year of experience working in a commercial kitchen setting.

Skills: Ability to consistently demonstrate the ability to focus on cooking tasks and ensuring procedures and standards of food quality are met. Effective communication and organization skills; able to adapt and work calmly in a sometimes fast paced and stressful environment; able to do medium to moderate lifting; able to work independently and with minimal supervision; must excel in customer service and enjoy working in a University environment.

This position is in scope of CUPE 1975.
