Salary Information: The salary range is $45,770 to $71,517 per annum (Information Technology, Phase 1).  The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Primary Purpose: The web designer is responsible for leading and implementing the interface design for websites that Advancement and Community Engagement has responsibility to provide content and services for in alignment with the university’s position and visual identity.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director, Advancement Services, the designer works as part of multiple teams on website design and implementation. This position has a working relationship with a diverse set of staff who provide communications strategy and content and online services for the university. This position develops and implements the creative and interface design of websites and ensures a high standard of visual design, consistency and a high quality user experience. This position must be aware of and continually balance the needs of users with the business of the university, demonstrating sound and consistent judgment.

The position keeps pace with best practices in web design that optimizes usage and advises institutional and unit staff on the same. This position must be highly collaborative as it works with a cross-section of staff including communications and information technology professionals. The environment is dynamic and fast-paced with numerous and competing deadlines. Evening and weekend work may be required. The consequence of error is significant for the university’s reputation.

The Web Designer is a member of the Advancement Services team.  The Advancement Services team is part of Advancement and Community Engagement, which also includes Aboriginal Engagement, Alumni Relations, Development, Finance & Trusts, Community Outreach and Engagement, and University Communications teams. Advancement and Community Engagement is comprised of more than 90 professional and support staff. The Advancement Services team is located at the Advancement and Community Engagement office.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide expertise on website design for websites  Advancement and Community Engagement has responsibility for maintaining and provisioning
  • Ensure website designs are developed and incorporate appropriate security
  • Ensure a high standard of visual design and consistency of websites in alignment with the university’s visual identity guidelines.
  • Ensure content and navigational infrastructure in website design optimizes effectiveness, usability and accessibility while minimizing on-going maintenance requirements to support the goals and strategic directions of the university
  • Actively assess and find ways to improve websites
  • Provide accurate estimates of work to develop new websites or modify existing websites
  • Collaborate and provide expertise to campus units and colleges to support and enable effective implementation of institutional and unit-level websites

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Art/Graphic Design with 3 years’ experience, or a post-secondary diploma with more than five  years applicable experience. 

Experience: Extensive experience in aspects of website design, creation and maintenance in a professional setting. Knowledge of IT systems, business analysis and project management would be is an asset. A well-developed online portfolio of previous work.

Skills: Demonstrated ability to develop, design and maintain websites; excellent working knowledge of HTML, CSS, XML, and PHP; demonstrated proficiency with development software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro, MSOffice and other graphic/design software; working knowledge of content management systems such as Cascade or equivalent software; strong creative and problem solving abilities as they pertain to IT development and graphic design; strong editorial abilities for quality control on public websites; effective interpersonal skills; the ability to work collaboratively and as an effective team member.
