Salary Information: The salary range is $44,873 to $70,115 per annum (Specialist/Professional, Phase 1).  The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Primary Purpose: To support the development, implementation and evaluation of effective and reliable communications strategies that advance the university’s reputation and promote the university’s strategic objectives and successes to internal and external stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally, including the media, government, industry and the general public; and to advance and implement communications strategies in support of the university’s health sciences initiative.  The portfolio is project driven including planning and production of communications in support of key project milestones, college and university accomplishments, research activities and various profile opportunities for the health science initiative; and campus-wide communication initiatives for the strategic and college communications teams in University Advancement. The Coordinator will spend approximately 50 percent of their time on the health sciences portfolio with the remaining time allocated between the strategic and college communications portfolios.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, with a dotted line report to the Director of Operations, CHSD office, and working closely and collaboratively with a talented group of university communicators and key stakeholders in health sciences, the Communications Coordinator supports appropriate communication strategies, develops and produces materials and keeps stakeholders informed of the status of projects and supporting communication plans. The strategic communications team is responsible for production of official university publications, media relations, government relations communications and executive communications. The college communications portfolio involves the development and implementation of a strategic college and school communications program that increases coordination, consistency and alignment between college and university initiatives and priorities. 

The position requires a high level of creativity, analytical thinking and conceptualization in order to effectively formulate communication initiatives and make recommendations that affect the university as a whole. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for positive outcomes with respect to day-to-day communications support.  The position is located in a fast-paced, high-volume office with competing demands that require the ability to work under pressure. The position exercises discretionary decision-making and establishment of effective working relations with the media and a broad clientele of stakeholders.

University Advancement (UA) is responsible for institutional advancement programs (alumni and external relations, communications and fundraising), and as such is dedicated to supporting the advancement needs of all colleges, units and the university as a whole. UA is comprised of specialized teams including Advancement Services, Alumni Relations, Community Outreach and Engagement, Development, Finance and Trusts, First Nations & Métis Engagement and Marketing and Communications. More than 100 advancement professionals and support staff work at various locations including the UA office at Innovation Place, in colleges and schools across campus, at the English River office and at the Station 20 West office. The Coordinator is located primarily in the central University Advancement office at Innovation Place and spends time in health sciences as required to ensure an understanding of the environment, programs, initiatives and communication needs.

Accountabilities:

  • Support the advancement of the university’s strategic directions, as well as raising the profile and advancing the reputation of the university locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Ensure key university messages and strategic goals are effectively communicated to local, national, and international stakeholders.
  • Understand health sciences and the university’s priorities and work with relevant stakeholders to create communications materials that benefit the university and the health sciences colleges.
  • Manage communications projects, including implementation and evaluation.
  • Build collaborative relationships and partnerships within the university.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: An undergraduate degree in business, applied communications, or public relations. Membership in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset.

Experience: Two to three years of directly-related experience in communications planning, editing and writing.  Demonstrated progression in level of responsibilities would be considered an asset.

Skills: Superior project management skills; demonstrated experience in developing and evaluating communication policies and procedures; effective organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to take initiative and work collaboratively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written; demonstrated ability to balance a demanding workload, multitask and adjust to changing priorities; creativity and a good sense of design with a keen attention to detail; exceptional customer ethic including diplomacy, tact and professionalism in dealing with clients; and proficiency with web-based applications, word processing and desktop publishing, spreadsheets and databases.  Photography skills would be an asset.
